Leopold's is a bar/restaurant completely in Bavarian style. Expect all the German and Austrian foods you can think of, and they deliver in taste and portions. They even confirm the stereotype in their waiters and waitresses who wear typical Oktoberfest outfits, and you can order a two-liter 'boot' draught beer. On those warm spring and summer evenings, you can also sit outside. It might not be the coziest place in Russian Hill, but it's fun. The atmosphere and the extensive beer menu will make you say 'prost!

The boisterous spirit of an Austrian gasthaus is alive and well in Russian Hill. All thanks are due to Leopold's, which draws a young crowd to its slice-of-Vienna dining room, adorned wit wood booths and deer antlers, and attended to by cheerful female servers in dirndls. If dinner alone is your goal, go early; convivial groups lend the space a communal mien, but also get larger and louder as the night wears on and the boots of beer are drained.

The carte du jour is rife with well-executed classics like golden-brown pork wiener schnittzel with cucumber salad, vegetable strudel, and delectable raspberry Linzer torte. If you've got a group in tow, the choucroute garni, laden with pork ribs, sausage, potatoes, and sauerkraut, is a crowd-pleaser.

Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Albert hat Klaus Rainer in den 1980er-Jahren den drittgrößten Bundesstaat der USA zu seiner Wahlheimat gemacht. Die Geschwister stammen ursprünglich aus Tamsweg im Salzburger Lungau. Heute sind sie erfolgreiche Gastronomen in einer der faszinierendsten Städte der Welt. "Nachdem wir mehrere Jahre in San Francisco Restaurants betrieben hatten, wurde uns immer wieder die Frage gestellt, weshalb es keine österreichischen Restaurants in San Francisco gibt", erzählt Klaus Rainer dem KURIER. "Also haben wir uns 2010 entschieden, ein nach unseren Vorstellungen und Erinnerungen geschaffenes, uriges und gemütliches Gasthaus zu eröffnen." Entgegen aller Ratschläge, wie er betont: "Das Essen sei zu deftig, junge Leute hier würden kein Bier trinken, deutsch-österreichische Küche sei aus der Mode wurde uns gesagt."

At this “classic” Russian Hill “gasthaus”, “friendly”, “pretty girls” in dirndls deliver “hearty”sausages, schnitzel and other “reasonably priced” Austrian plates with Italian twists alongside “ice-cold” European brews from “boot-shaped glasses” in an Alpine “lodge” setting; the “raucous” crowd can make for “deafening” noise, but that's to be expected since it's like “Oktoberfest year-round” here (or come for weekend brunch, “a great option to escape” the din).
